I was originally planning on showcasing the work of a different artist but I received an email from Sye TC-5 over the weekend that changed my mind all together. Even though I didn't contribute to this production I just felt compelled to post it because of how open it got me. Pedro Bell and his work for the Funkadelic Experience has inspired so many young artists. I remember the talks that Bluster, Fuse Green and myself used to have when we all worked together on how dope the Parliament Funkadelic album covers are while we were building on concepts for the line. Regardless this TC-5 production helped inspire me to dig up some works to share them with you on Pedro Bell. Oh also enjoy the video clip below of a short animated infomercial that he did as well.

Happy 25th Birthday L.A.

Nothing like chillin with the crew you came up with. Last Friday, we all got together for L.A.'s 25th birthday. And I am actually proud to say no drama popped off. Just a few years ago every night when there were 6 or more of us chilling something was bound to happen. Just the energy you attract I guess. Well these days life's a lil smoother. Happy Birthday L.A. Be easy out there. Peace.

EXPANSION Spring/Summer 09

Kirk, O and Surr

For those of you who don't know Captain Kirk aka Hiroshi "Kirk" Kakiage is definitely one of the first dudes to bring American streetwear to Japan. Back in the mid 90's Kirk and T (Seven Summits) was rippin, runnin and connecting the continents like no other. For the past few years he's been building his line EXPANSION. Using luxurious Japanese fabrics and American construction, the line is a pure concentration of Kirk's style and taste. His Spring/Summer 09 collection puts a subtle twist on classic pieces and continues Kirk's foundations of connecting the dots. Now you know and knowing is half the battle. Peace

Old School Mondays - Freedom Party Edition

Awww man, preparing this post has me smiling for an hour already.................

First things first, def gotta give a shout-out to all the folks over at the Freedom Party.  DJ's Herbert, Cosi and Marc Smooth.  I remember hitting up that party on the regular when it was at Starfoods catching some of the best joints from the early 80's and then running down to GoodWorld to catch up w/Shan and Torbitt and continue my dosage. Man, those were superstar Friday's.

And before those days, my musical taste was heavily influenced by my mom and my cousin Tracy. (Thank you both for having such great taste.)  I'd have to say one of the things that touch me most when listening to this music is reflecting on how much fun you can have in the hardest of times.  All of the music below came out prior to my 5th birthday. Up until now I haven't seen any of these videos.  All I can say is do yourself a favor and build your musical catalog, get some Alexander O'neal, Mtume, S.O.S. Band, Surface, Loose Ends, Kool & the Gang, Daytion, Rufus, The Crusaders, The System or you can just go to the Freedom Party and sweat it out.  Peace

I think I've watched this video 10 times in the last 40 minutes.
The outfits in here are wild for the night.

I still remember my mom schooling me on the drama between Howard Hewitt and Jody Watley.

Straight Classic Material

Hands down one of my favorite joint to hear in a spot.  Right up there with Jingling Baby.

WHAT THE HELL ARE WE PAYING FOR?

So, it's Friday night, around 8:30 and I'm at Utica Avenue transferring from the 4 to the 3 train. Well I want to transfer but I'm going to have to wait a few minutes for the 3 train to come.  Coolbeans.  I decide it's time to throw my gum out.  I walk to the trash can and...........................BAM!!!!

Now that's a HOT mess right there.  I mean I could just throw my gum right in there.  It really wouldn't make that much of difference but I say to myself lemme find another garbage can.  So I walk to the opposite end of the platform and..........................BAM!!!!

Now, I'm HOT.  What part of the game is this?  I mean "WHAT THE HELL ARE WE PAYING FOR?"  And to top it all off, (You must be thinking he can't top that.)  Bust the fly shit.  There were at least 8 people whom worked for transit on the platform standing around doing nothing, nada.  If you look at the first pic you'll see the little booth in the far right corner.  There were at least 3 people in there.  How they could sit there and stare at that disgusting mess for hours on end and not do something is beyond me.

Enough about them, the MTA that is.  I just want to know what are we as New Yorkers, who pay to ride the train everyday,  going to do?  Well, the first thing I'm going do is put someone on blast.

Brenda, you need to get it together.  I will definitely be writing a formal letter to anyone who is willing to listen as well as continue to document the less for more financial practices of the MTA.  Peace.

Siempre En La Lucha, Save the Babies.

This Sunday morning I would like to inspire our readers to focus on the children around them and their relationships with them....

This is one of my favorite artist
and authors of all time:

On Children

by Kahlil Gibran

Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of life's longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.

You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls,For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams.

You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you.For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday.

You are the bows from which your children as living arrows are sent forth. The archer sees the mark upon the path of the infinite, and He bends you with His might that His arrows may go swift and far.

Let our bending in the archer's hand be for gladness,For even as He loves the arrow that flies, so He loves also the bow that is stable.

This is one of my favorite actors. Do the KNOWLEDGE to these clips and see if you can add it up.

The Devil's Advocate-To me this movies depicts a man taking the devil into hell through the virtue of integrity. And why was he successful in all his undertakings? Yes, my word is bond and bond is life. And I shall give my life before my word shall fail. Also the key of the wedding band, a symbol of LOVE, and UNIDAD which helped him master his own self.

Scent of a Woman--In this flick Al really touches my heart. As a man who was raised by Allah (in the name of Virtuous), I had guidance and support and can relate to peer pressure and the hardship of making the right decisions. He really BOMBS ASS and shows and proves that it only takes ONE and we are not alone.

City Hall--Hot Damn, This is crazy! This movie came out in 1980 and it reminds me of Obama's Inauguaration Speech where he said that it's up to us all. We can CHANGE... It's really JUST US and JUSTICE for ALL. What's really SAD is that our babies are still being killed by each other, the cops, and their loved ones. Nueva York STAND UP, we got work to do. Let's Build heaven on Earth, HERE and NOW.

Any Given Sunday--This is the best pep talk I've ever heard a coach give. This is the kind of motivational speech our babies need to hear everytime they're tested. Inch by inch, one by one, We make a Difference everyday.

Richard Franklin Lennox Thomas Pryor III (December 1, 1940 – December 10, 2005) was an American comedian, actor and writer. From Children to Men

I know this was all over the blogs and it may not even matter to some of you but for me it's something which I look forward to. As a child this was one of my favorite books and I remember I used to sit and draw them all the time. I couldn't find any of them to post but I'm sure my sister still has most of my drawings from my early years which include them. Where the Wild Things Are left such an impact on me that when I was living in San Diego and Todd McFarlane came out with them I rushed to get them all. These and Monsters Inc. are favorites in my toy collection. So needless to say I get jokes being called the "40 year old virgin" because of the love I have for these toys, not to mention I have them out in the open. So I look forward to the release and taking Chris and James to see this so they can enjoy it as much as I did.

all you see is CRIME IN THE CITY...

If you are a New Yorker like me, you know the MTA/Albany is ready to give us "straphangers" the 09 bump. They reportedly don't have the money needed to operate the subways system at it's current handicapped state. So instead we will now have to deal with the elimination of whole train and bus lines along with service cuts of others. To top this all off the fare is reported to increase from $2 to $2.50. The daily, weekly and monthly unlimited cards will also increase in fare.

So now that that's out the way, what do you feel about this? Are you ok with there being no B25 anymore? Are you cool with the W train being a thing of the past? Now don't get me wrong there have been improvements since the days of my childhood in the 80's. I was on a 4 train last week and the lights went out for about 10 seconds. I remember when that was a daily occurrence on the 2 train which could result in someone loosing a tooth from fist to jaw action and being robbed instantly. So yes the trains are safer these days. However I still have to wait 10 minutes plus for a 3 train at Atlantic Ave during rush hour. The trains on the weekend are a bit of a joke and have been for quite some time. However fares have gone up and up and now we are here again living in increase land.

But who am I kidding, at the end of the day the fares will increase and I'll pay. Why...because I need to get to and from work and as much as I love my home of Brooklyn I enjoy the WHOLE city (minus S.I. sorry). The weather is getting warmer and my bike will be a major mode of transportation for the kid once again. That said I am not looking forward to this and it's not really because of my personal dissatisfaction. What about the folks who are struggling to put together the two bucks go to one way? I made a joke yesterday that the train fares have been pretty much on par with the price of a slice of pizza through the years. When I was younger a slice cost $1.25 and so did a token (remember tokens?). Then they both went up to $1.50 and now 2 bucks ($2.50 in the city). That's five dollars for two slices and 5 bucks to go to and from somewhere. That's 35 bucks a week (weekends not included). You kinda have to get one of those unlimited cards otherwise it's a problem. People don't have jobs and have to pay more to travel. *smh* Get a bike people, walk more and fill out those apps. It's gonna get worse before it gets better.

I personally don't care to point fingers anymore. After spending a fortune traveling via the railroad system in Japan I see our fare as being, lets say comparable. I've seen worse my friends. In Tokyo their "unlimited" cards are a bit of a joke and there is no 1 day or weekly unlimited. The fares are also based on the distance of your trip, meaning the farther you travel the more you pay. Your in town for two weeks, TOUGH! I hope you save up because it's gonna cost. At least we have some sort of relief here...I guess.

For a look into how these service cuts may affect you check the link below.

Bloomberg to Open Campaign Offices for Re-Election Bid

As the stunning news is passed to me that I will indeed have to pay an increased fare for more sub par service from the MTA , I read the following headline Bloomberg to Open Campaign Offices for Re-Election Bid. Now, just like the fare increase this is something that I knew was coming..................but seriously, 4 years ago his whole platform was that he was the guy with the financial savvy to help New York recover after 9/11. After a $84,000,000.00 re-election campaign, 2 recessions, a few gun control alterations, political party shift and a term limit extension, I really wonder if this is the man to lead us into the next decade. He's starting to come off as the guy tired w/the job he has and not quite able yet to get the job he wants. Not too sure if I'm voting for 4 more years of that. Peace.

American Pop

Mel Ramos is a name that can be mentioned within the same breath as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein just to name a couple. I am by far not an expert in art but I do know what I like and where I've drawn inspiration from. Mel Ramos' work made me look at my work a bit differently. It is all about approach I would say. His work during the early and mid 60's gained him recognition due to the fact that, well sex sells and of course nowadays who isn't fond of the female form?? Aside from the pin up style girls he alsodid a show based his renditions of comic book heroes.

Blackout Music: 3/25/2009

Man, I've been pondering this post for awhile.  I mean how much justice could I really do this song.  Lyrics by Bob Dylan and music by Jimi Hendrix.  This is truly a nominee for the best song ever made.  Released in 1968, I've spent years, months and days absorbed in the sonic genius that is "The Jimi Hendrix Experience".  On every level the composition is nothing short of cinematic. And lucky me I found some additional info that left me further stuck on stupid as to the complete genius that is Jimi Hendrix's version of "All Along the Watchtower".  Peace.

Economics and Morality 101

A wise person (my mom) once told me that "A fool and his money are soon parted". That being said, the worst thing about this whole financial crisis is that the mainstream media has focused only on the losers of this mess. 401K's evaporating, homes foreclosed and futures altered forever.....well, for every loser there is a winner and we don't seem to hear much about those guys. I mean money doesn't really disappear, it's just transferred somewhere else. So I pass along the below videos for your information. Satirist (Jon Stewart) vs Financial expert (Jim Cramer) and I now know to see the irony in the truth you really have to understand it. Please take a moment or three to watch the clips below. Bass to Ya Face!

The true definition of what most of us young graphic designers was summed up to me by this man here. Saul Bass breaks down what a commercial artist is. For most of us we all have a love for art and started out at a young age and always wanted to make a career doing what we love. I've seen through out the years people with talent who just decide to stop doing art all together or have chosen to keep it personal and for their own enjoyment.

There is a big hurdle once we do start on our career paths as a commercial artist. To create at times can be hard for any artist but to create simply for the sake of work for hire can down right be a pain in the ass. Like I said a hurdle that we have to over come. We all start out doing work for people that we know isn't worth the time or the headache (or even the money...yes I said it so what!!).

We don't need to sell our souls when it comes to doing what we love - creating!! We are commercial artists and we should always raise the bar when it comes to our work so it shows growth and understanding. We are making a living out of our work correct???!!!

Back to the man, Saul Bass not only created amazing pieces of commercial art but he also brought them to life doing film title sequences. How great it is to see an idea have motion and sound instead of being flat. He's worked on films we all love such as Goodfellas, Cape Fear and Casino just to name a few. Take a moment and do some research on this man and it doesn't hurt to learn from those who helped pave the way for us today.

This I found so entertaining because it showed me how they we inspired by his work enough to set up the credit sequence for the animated movie "The Incredibles" to reflect it. Not to mention its one of my favorite animated movies.

MG in JP. We Rising SUN!

In late February I took a trip with the beautiful Shino Yanagawa to her home of Japan. While there I planned to do a few things. I wanted to see a few of my friends who live there, visit some temples and get some feedback on the MotherGreen clothing line as a whole. Well I got to do that and a whole lot more.

From the beginning of my trip there was nothing but fun coming my way. We had a party at the good man Ryo's bar called "Ripple" (my Brooklyn heads might find this name familiar). We had a good time conversing with friends, listening to good music and eating some fried yam appetizers. The train system in Tokyo doesn't run 24 hours so if you miss the last train (which leaves around midnight) you're just left out like foreskin after a muslim birth. Being that we had a big group of people in the house of course we did just that. It turned out fine because we spent the evening with those who didn't make the train discussing Ryan Leslie, Caron Wheeler and a few other really good R&B acts.

To satisfy my thirst for temples and shrines, Shino's family took me to Kamakura to visit the large Buddha statue as well as other beautiful temple sites. After visiting the first temple we had a delicious lunch complete with grilled salmon, sesame tofu, spinach... the list goes on. The food was great as well as the service. Shino's father gave me the pleasure seeing him wearing a dope MG t-shirt. After a rare bird sighting we went to see the great Buddha. It was quite a sight to behold. There's even an entrance for you to view the insides and see how this great structure was put together.

Once done with Kamakura, I turned my sights back on Tokyo for some city living. I walked through neighborhoods like Shibuya, Ginza and Shinjuku. In Shibuya I was fortunate to have in store meetings with a few buyers and get some a professional Japanese perspective on what we were doing with MotherGreen. The response was positive and quite informative. I even left with a new business opportunity for MG. It felt good to have people in a foreign country recognize the effort and quality we put into our product. Wait til yall get to see then new stuff! Special thanks to my dear Shino for being translator slash business manager for me while on this trip.

To close out my trip Shino and I took a two day excursion to Kyoto. This was my opportunity to jump headfirst into ancient Japanese culture, pre Western cultural invasion. Kyoto is a very beautiful city and I recommend all those who can go to visit do so. I saw a golden temple, a Buddhist temple which only opens every 100 years, another Zen temple which opens every 33 years. Lets just say the mathematics were on my side for this trip. As we walked through the city seeing all type of young people visiting cultural treasures of their people I thought of home. I though about the lack of young people I see going to museums and the like to take in American art and history. I then thought about what these children were going to see and realized that we live in a baby nation. We have not been in existence as a country for 400 years yet. Other civilizations have faced whole changes in their national religion, changes in political ideology and... atomic bombs (yeah I said it) and they kept on truckin! We as a nation are facing serious issues with economics, healthcare and tolerance for our fellow citizens. It is more than possible for us to come out of this. We might just need to humble ourselves and *gasp* try some new ideas (perish the thought) .

Well until next time be optimistic and invent possibilities in your life. I'm inventing the possibility of having the greatest clothing company to grace the planet in quite some time. I seen it... like a Zenith (c) Ghost.

Photos taken by Shino Yanagawa (except the one she's in with me...a stranger took that)

Brooklyn's Own CHIN CHIN (Stop Sleeping)

I've had the pleasure of making some wonderful friends in this great city of New York. Some of them are bartenders, photographers, designers, jerks, lawyers (of the non jerk type) etc. Today I want to talk about some musician friends of mine. My boys CHIN CHIN on the Def Jux label. These cats have been laying the ground work for a great music career the past few years. Their new album "The Flashing The Fancing" just dropped yesterday in stores (go pick it up). Their music is funktastic in my opinion. And of course...they rep Brooklyn like the kid so how can you go wrong. Peep the video for their lead single "Go There With You" below. Then if you like what you see SUPPORT THE ARTS!

Optical Delusions & Visual Confusions

" I believe that producing pictures, as I do, is almost solely a question of wanting so very much to do it well"

I wasn't sure exactly how to begin until I found this particular quote. I think in every artist's time (graphic or illustrator) they begin to understand their work. I was doing a search online and happened to come across a post on a particular game (Echochrome) for the PSP. It automatically hit me that they were exploring the works of M.C. Escher and animating it in a much simpler way for us to enjoy and understand. So it lead me to this post.

M.C. Escher born Maurits Cornelis Escher (1898-1972) was an amazing graphic illustrator who aside from real life sketches worked on Lithographs, Woodcuts and Wood Engravings. When you see his work you notice an eye for detail. It is certainly a gift when your mind can work a certain way to unravel things, put them back together in order to present in a way that captures our imaginations. His works have inspired me to push the limit and enjoy what I do even more. To look at the simplicity of black and white art and how powerful it can be. With so many pieces to showcase I only selected a few that will hopefully inspire you as well.

Old School Mondays

I'm gonna dig into a little history if you don't mind. Every afternoon after school I would run home to catch the Box that Rocks aka Video Music Box. The good folks over here at MotherGreen & H.K.M all share in common our love for that time of innocence for NYC. We were given the option to view music videos and performances by artists that were on the come up. So here's another Old School Mondays from a MG perspective.

This is the God Positive K. First Priority Records artist down with MC Lyte and Audio Two. One of my favorite jams.

If you can't dance to this Queen Latifah cut I don't know what to tell you. My man Shan Boogie is good for playing this record.

Now this is actually recorded from another NY show called Hot Tracks that came on back in the 80s. I love this group. The Force MD's are official hip hop and brought that Harmonizing sound to the mainstream. And they're from Staten Island.

Another Brooklyn smash right here. The Fat Boys aren't appreciated enough these days for me.

Now for those who don't know, Just-Ice is the God from Ft. Greene Brooklyn. Also known as the original Gangster of Rap.
