Before CGI came into effect there was a whole different way to go about animation. I remember when I was younger my brother put me on to a large assortment of animated movies & magazines which allowed me to become more creative and experimental. Soon to realize one of my main inspirators was a ground breaker ahead of his time by the name of Ralph Bakshi. If you haven't heard of him he is one of Brooklyn's own and hales from Brownsville. He changed the game considerably and I am sure you may have seen some of his works (Mighty Mouse & SpiderMan) but had no idea he was behind it. He's worked with the likes of the legendary Frank Frazzetta for a collaborative effort on Fire and Ice. He also worked with Barry White, Philip Michael-Thomas (Tubbs of Miami Vice people) and the late Scatman Crothers as his main character voices in Coonskin.
This is an old article I wrote back in 96 for Rappages Magazine
In the graffitti world these names are just a few who have inspired many to reach for their heights when it comes to their art.
Fritz the Cat, Coonskin aka Streetfight, Wizards
American Pop, Fire and Ice, Cool World
The last work I remember was a series he worked on for HBO called Spicy City. Needless to say he has a great catalog of movies (not all are intended for the babies but for the kid in us all) so check them out. Just to name a few are Lord of the Rings (Animated), Hey Good Lookin' and Heavy Traffic.
